NEW FROM SCALETRAXX ScaleTraxx is proud to announce our first Pre-Order: a ready-to run Great Northern ‘Hutch” caboose! This model is a must-have for any Great Northern modeler. The “Hutch” caboose was built by Great Northern in 1953 from a retired boxcar frame to combine a baggage car and a caboose into a single car to reduce weight on select branch lines. While Great Northern originally had plans to build eight, only one was finished. The “Hutch” also received distinctive trucks from the Locomotive Material Finishing Company in 1954. This caboose was most often assigned to the “Hutchinson Local” from Lyndale Junction Yard in Minneapolis to Hutchinson, MN. It was famously paired with Great Northern NW5 186. Both “The Hutch” and NW5 186 survived into the Burlington Northern merger being renumbered BN 11272 and BN 986, respectively. When the Hutchinson branch was abandoned, “The Hutch” was reassigned to the “Osseo Turn” where it continued to serve until being sold by Burlington Northern to Wildcat Oil Field Contractors in 1982. The original “Hutch” still survives today as a bar in Devil’s Lake, ND. Want to learn more?
